Rental and Utilities Assistance Remain in Minnesota

Although the United States Supreme Court recently overturned the federal COVID-19 eviction moratorium, the State of Minnesota still has protections in place to keep individuals and families that are behind on their rent safe and in their homes. Minnesota’s pandemic eviction moratorium is being incrementally phased out as well, however, eligible households that have submitted an application to RentHelpMN cannot be evicted before June 1, 2022.

Households that have past due rent and past due utility bills dating back to March 13, 2020, and/or need assistance with upcoming rent are encouraged to submit an application now. Again, you must have your application in to RentHelpMN to remain protected from eviction as all termination and eviction protections will be lifted in Minnesota on October 12, 2021, except for those households with a pending application. To apply for COVID-19 Emergency Rental Assistance, please visit renthelpmn.org or call 211. The Greater Twin Cities United 211 helpline also has multilingual operators available to answer questions related to rental assistance.

The RentHelpMN website also provides a timeline of important dates related to the phasing out of the state’s eviction moratorium, information regarding your rights and responsibilities as a renter, how to seek legal assistance, and other vital resources.

To help homeowners struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Minnesota Housing is in the process of designing a new homeowner assistance fund initiative known as HomeHelpMN. To learn more, please sign up here for email updates or visit the HomeHelpMN webpage. Minnesota homeowners can also access current information and resources regarding mortgage forbearance and foreclosure prevention at mnhousing.gov.
