It’s CACFP Week in the United States!
CACFP, the USDA’s Child and Adult Food Care Program, provides nutritious meals and snacks to children at home, in preschool and childcare centers, after-school programs and shelters, as well as healthy food to homebound adults and those in adult care facilities. Founded in 1968 as a special pilot program known as the Special Food Service Program for Children, CACFP now serves nearly 5 million adults and children across the nation every day.
CAPRW Head Start & Early Head Start is a participant in CACFP and is excited to celebrate CACFP Week with our Head Start students, their families, and our larger community. Yet, this week is about more than celebrating this vital program, it is about bringing awareness to CACFP and highlighting information on current legislative proposals, regulation on advocacy issues, and educational tools and resources that support the work of the CACFP network that ensures that all American children and adults can “access nutritious food year-round.”
To learn more about how you can celebrate and raise awareness during CACFP Week, please download this free webinar on Zoom. And for more information about CACFP, you can visit the National CACFP Sponsors Association (NCA) online. The NCA is the “leading national organization” supporting organizations that administer the CACFP. The NCA website provides details on how local agencies can become CACFP Organization Members. Moreover, this site maintains a treasure trove of downloadable information on best practices, educational materials, activities for kids, nutrition and exercise tips, healthy recipes, the CACFP Toolkit, program support, professional development tools, summertime and after-school programs, and other essential resources for children, families, adults, and provider organizations.
