Staff Spotlight: Christine Yang

Community Action is happy to announce the recipient of our 2024 June Staff Spotlight, Family Engagement Coordinator, Christine Yang

Her first nominator said, "Christine exemplifies the values and mission of Community Action and Head Start. I have worked with her for over 15 years and have seen the difference she had made in the lives of staff and families alike. Whether she is obtaining coats and mitten's for children in the winter/bikes for kids in the spring or creating/facilitating a program for easier access to a driver's license for adults, she does it with humility and compassion. No one could ask for a better supervisor or coworker! I am proud to nominate Christine for this award! She is truly deserving of these accolades!

Her second nominator said, "She is friendly, energetic and kind hearted person. She is innovative in her work habits. She very smart and lead by example. She keeps us updated about technologies and also give everyone opportunity to share their resources. Also, teach her staff the tools by creating video samples to increase our knowledge of our job duties."

We are so grateful to have staff members such as Christine Yang that exemplify our mission, vision, and values! Recently we caught up with Christine to learn more about her and how she views her role at Community Action.

What is your favorite part about working at CAPRW?
"I love seeing families meet successes through their own ability and persistence.  I'm especially lucky to work with the best team supporting families and have the most dedicated, kind loving coworkers."

Do you have a favorite memory about working with families?
"A single mom fled from a domestic violence situation and arrived in MN without any support.  It took time and care for her to build enough trust to open up.  She worked tirelessly to support her family, slowly saving enough to move into her own apartment and buy a car.  A few years after I stopped working with her, she dropped off donations to share with others that were in a similar situation to her in the past.  She wanted to let me know that she now felt safe and purchased a home.  I'm grateful to see her and others transition into a safe and stable environment."

How did you discover your passion for working with families?
"In college, I worked and interned at MN Literacy Council and Children's Dental Services.  I observed the will and strength of vulnerable communities and also expanded my view of systematic disparities.  It rooted my passion in public service and advocating for families to access resources to slowly move out of poverty."

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time outside of work?
"I enjoy biking, walking/running, and exploring state parks.  I'm a big Vikings fan, love watching and attending their games. I've been to 10 countries and love international travel - seeing how people around the world live, exploring natural landscapes, learning history and culture, and indulging in local cuisine!"
