Racism and the Economy Series Continues with "Focus on Financial Services"

Tomorrow, November 16, 2021, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm Central Time, the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis will host the 10th installment of the virtual event series, Racism and the Economy. An ongoing initiative of the Federal Reserve System, Racism and the Economy brings together scholars, economists, business and nonprofit leaders, consumer protection advocates, and experts from the financial industry to address systematic racism and inequities in America’s economy and propose strategies designed to “improve economic outcomes” for low-income and BIPOC households.

Tomorrow’s installment, “Focus on Financial Services,” will examine both historical and contemporary obstacles that people of color encounter in the financial services industry, which often lead them to “expensive and sometimes exploitative alternatives.” This session will also “envision new products and practices, prioritizing people and places that have experienced chronic disinvestment and exclusion” and “explore ways to address root causes that can result in more equitable access to financial services and help close these gaps.”

You can also learn more about both future and past offerings in this series, including access to videos, recap articles, policy and action proposals, and additional resources from all previous installments (focusing on issues including education, housing, employment, healthcare, criminal justice, entrepreneurship, and the wealth divide).

About Racism and the Economy

Racism forms the foundation of inequality in our society. It limits opportunity for people of color and threatens the health of our economy. While the global pandemic has intensified racial and economic disparities, the killing of George Floyd has galvanized people from all walks of life to address the systems and structures that enable and perpetuate these outcomes.

Hosted by all 12 District Banks of the U.S. Federal Reserve System, Racism and the Economy is a virtual series that brings together community, business, and academic leaders to examine the economic impact of racism and advance bold ideas and concrete actions to achieve an economy that makes opportunity available to everyone.
