SNAP Enrollment up 20% in Minnesota Due to Covid-19

In late October, the Minnesota Department of Human Services reconvened its Nutritious Food Coalition under a new name: the SNAP Coalition. The SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) Coalition is made up of partners representing the non-profit sector, tribal governments, state and county agencies, and other SNAP Outreach programs.

During the first six-months of the coronavirus pandemic, SNAP enrollment in Minnesota increased by nearly 20 percent, almost doubling state expenditures to upwards of $77 million per month. The increased need resulted new initiatives including E-SNAP (Emergency SNAP), P-EBT (Pandemic EBT), and Summer P-EBT.

Now, in an effort to continue meeting the increasing health and nutritional needs of Minnesota families in the age of COVID-19, the SNAP Coalition is further:

  • Identifying and addressing barriers faced by eligible Minnesotans seeking SNAP.
  • Informing and helping shape policy direction.
  • Providing guidance on ways to better serve Minnesotans in need of healthy food.
  • Fostering relationships among groups to streamline efforts to better serve families with low incomes.
