Working Together: The Archives

Minnesota households still have until September 30 to complete their 2020 Census questionnaire

In August, the “Working Together” blog explained that census takers will begin to knock on the doors of Minnesota households that have yet to complete their 2020 Census questionnaire. In addition, that blog noted that the Census Bureau has moved their deadline up one month and that data collection will now conclude on September 30, 2020.

We continue to lead all 50 states in our response rate to the 2020 Census as more than three-quarters of all Minnesota households have successfully completed their questionnaire, already exceeding our state’s response rate from 2010. Minnesota also has the highest rate of census questionnaires submitted online. But, there is still more work to be done.

As We Count Minnesota reminds us: “The U.S. Constitution requires a count (census) of all people living in the United States every 10 years. A complete, accurate census count is necessary for equal political representation, fair distribution of federal and state funding, and sound planning and investment in infrastructure, real estate, business development and public policy. There is no citizenship question on the 2020 Census.”

And, while census takers continue to visit Minnesota households in person, you are not required to open your door to them, and can still submit your completed census form to the US Census Bureau between now and the end of September either by telephone (800-330-2020), online (2020census.gov), or by mail (all US households were mailed census forms in March 2020).
