Updates for Community Action Head Start Food Distribution

Important updates to our food distribution efforts:

On Tuesday, June 2, Community Action Head Start/Early Head Start held its normal food distribution event at its McDonough and Battle Creek Head Start centers. Due to the damage that occurred to our headquarters at the Community Action Resource Center during the last week of May, the University Head Start food distribution event was moved to Wednesday, June 3. Collectively, these efforts provided more than 3,200 meals to Head Start children and their families.

This past Tuesday, June 9, the normal distributions took place again at McDonough and Battle Creek, while the University Head Start distribution was moved to The Journey School (where our Midway Head Start Center is housed). Again, Community Action Head Start/Early Head Start provided approximately 3,200 meals this past Tuesday. In addition, we are now able to distribute food donated from our program partner, The Food Group, who graciously held onto these meals following the closure of our headquarters on May 28.

Food distribution events at McDonough HS (1544 Timberlake Road) and Battle Creek HS (2181 Suburban Avenue) will continue for the next three Tuesdays (June 16, 23, and 30) from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. After June 30, distribution at these sites will cease, however, Community Head Start/Early Head Start will be providing the families that uses these distribution sites with information on where they can continue to access free meals for the remainder of the summer.

Also, on Tuesday, June 16, the University HS distribution event will once again take place at The Journey School (775 Lexington Parkway North) from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. Then, beginning on Wednesday, June 24, Community Action Head Start/Early Head Start will partner with The Journey School who will provide free meals to our children and families through their USDA Summer Food Service Program. This will occur each Wednesday at The Journey School from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm through August 26, 2020. Community Action Head Start families from our University, Skyline, Ruth Benner, Midway, and West Side centers will be directed to this site, which will provide each child with a total of 5 breakfasts and 5 lunches each week.
